24-12-00 Music publishers and songwriters file petition over web royalties
In the battle over payment for music distributed over the internet, the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) and the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA) have filed a petition with the US Copyright Office, seeking to establish royalty rates for online recordings. The songwriters and publishers have asked that a distinction be drawn between music that is streamed for temporary use, like a Net radio broadcast, and music that is downloaded and stored by consumers. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed its petition with the Copyright Office earlier already and urged the Copyright Office to step in and conduct a rulemaking proceeding.
10-12-00 Radio stations must pay for web broadcasts
Thousands of US radio stations broadcast over the internet, will soon have to pay for these webcasts. The US Copyright Office has ruled that record companies are entitled to royalties when radio stations broadcast recorded songs over the internet. About 4,000 of the 14,000 US radio stations broadcast over the internet, making them available to computer-equipped listeners worldwide.
28-11-00 Webradio's await decision on internet broadcasting
Various radio companies may face new fees for playing music over the internet, pending a decision by the US Copyright Office. The Copyright Office is weighing two issues: whether stations must pay record companies when they put music programs on the internet and whether surveys of customers' musical tastes mean an internet-based broadcaster is interactive and subject to possibly even more fees. The Copyright Office will announce a decision about radio stations broadcasting on the internet as well, as soon as this week. The music industry doesn't object to webradio’s taking customer requests and playing a song for the entire audience. However, when listeners receive a specially crafted station or program, than the site becomes interactive, the RIAA’s says and licensing fees are applicable.
